While I am sure this will inflame some "public educators", there a few realities about their position that needs to be understood. (Clearly this is not intended for those who already do an excellent job..you know who you are)
1) Parents provide the need for public educators' jobs. If parents were not having children, there would be no need for their positions.
2) Working parents provide public educators paychecks. Every time a teacher or administrator receives a paycheck, it came from the pocket of a working parent. (Not to mention from the pockets of working people who do not have children.)
Therefore, public educators are the employees of parents. We have hired you to educate our children. WE ARE YOUR BOSS. So, begin acting accordingly.
If you can find a valid argument against this, I would certainly like to hear it, otherwise, shape up and start doing what you need to do to save your job because South Carolinians are getting tired of you guys not doing what you have been hired to do. And, remember to treat the parents of the children's you teach with respect and as if they are your boss....becuase THEY ARE!

I know Thanksgiving is over.....
I realize that Thanksgiving is over, but, I found this today. If you take time to read this proclamation, I believe you to will be astonished at how far our country has fallen from its original foundations and its recongnition of the power of "Almighty God". With that being said, no wonder when are in the mess we are in.....
George Washington's 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation-
Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to "recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:
"Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.
And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best. Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3d day of October,A.D.1789.

White House Job Summit
I understand that the White House will be holding a job summit today. Isn't it interesting that the Chamber of Commerce, which represents small businesses all across this country, was not invited to the summit? With the way this administration has hammered those in the private sector, this is not surprising. One can only surmise that this administration is only interested in creating goverment jobs using the dollars of future generations that are not even here yet to vote. Go figure......

Abortion and Capitol Punishment
I have had people ask me how I can be against abortion yet for capital punishment. In fact, I was asked this question just this morning by my dear friend. I am always perplexed by the question because each issue is so vastly different and incomparable in all contexts. It is like asking how can you like ice cream but not like meat loaf.
The ONLY similarity in the case of abortion and capitol punishment is both are ending a life. When asked the question of how can I support one and not the other, it appears to me that the person is looking at each life, the life of the murderer and the life of a baby as the same. They are not. They are not the same in any way, shape or form.
The life of the baby has just begun. This baby has not sinned against anyone in any way. It is completely and totally innocent. There are those who would argue that a fetus is not a life. I disagree completely and this is another argument all together. I am writing this under the belief system that an embryo/fetus is a life. If you disagree with this premise then you should read no further.
Because this baby has sinned against no one and is a life, it should be protected and preserved at all costs. It should not be ended on the decision of one person (or one million for that matter). Our rule of law considers the taking of a life (without just cause) "Murder". Our law does provide for the necessity of taking a life "with cause" under certain circumstance IE. self defense.
An adult who has committed murder is another case entirely. This person has performed a grievous and heinous act against another human being without cause or justification. The baby did not. This person had choices in how he/she lived life. The baby did not. This person was convicted by a jury of his/her peers, 12 people. The baby did not get this benefit. This person crime is also subject to numerous appeals in his/her conviction and sentencing. The baby has no such benefit on his/her sentence.
So how can a person in any way look at the lives of these two people and compare them? The murderer committed an act, taking the life of another human being, is convicted, sentence by 12 people and then benefits from an exhaustive appeals process to eliminate any error before put to death. A baby, innocent of any wrong doing, is sentenced to death by one lone decision maker with no appeals process.
There simply is no comparison of these two individuals. One deserves to die for the evil acts committed while the other does not deserve to die but a chance to live a full and complete life.

The Election and Education
I have not made up my mind about who to vote for in the upcoming election. I really like what Giuliani has to say about the need for "real" choice in education and he supports vouchers. I also like what Fred Thompson had to say about education in the debate. (watch below) Gathering all the information one can about the candidates is the key to making the best decision. Only time will tell.

Politicians at Their Finest
Back before Thanksgiving, on Wednesday, November 14, 2007 to be exact, I was invited to a public forum that had been initiated by a SC Senate Subcommittee that was being held at 6:30 at Baxter Hood in Rock Hill, SC. This subcommittee was seeking public comment from taxpayers regarding state spending. I had been encouraged by several people interested in state politics to attend. It was my understanding there was a push to get tax payers to be vocal regarding unreasonable spending by our state government. So, being interested in what happens in Columbia, my husband and I attended. More out of an interest in hearing what other tax payers had to say than anything else.
Boy, were we surprised (not pleasantly) after arriving at this hearing and listening to speakers provide comment to this panel of legislators. Everyone who had signed up to speak seemed to be on someone’s payroll that had their hand out for more tax payer dollars. All of them wanted to make darn sure that spending was not curtailed; in fact, many wanted to make sure that spending was increased. My husband and I sat there in amazement and wondered; where are the taxpayers?
What really got my goat was listening to Walter Brown, a long time RH School Board member and a Clover School Board member, stand before that committee and talk about how the school district can no longer generate local tax dollars to fund their schools. All their money now comes from Columbia and how they need the SC General Assembly to continue shoveling money their direction. By their account, and countless others from the City of Rock Hill and other government recipients of tax dollars, now is not the time to curtail spending.
So what’s a mother and father of three who both work extremely hard and pay a gracious plenty in tax to do? You shove those hands looking for a hand out, out of the way and speak on behalf of hard working South Carolinians who are tired of the state taking $ out of their pockets.
This is where things get interesting. Little ole me, gets up there to address the subcommittee dressed very casually because I had had no previous intentions of speaking. I was merely going to sit in the back and listen quietly. Well, I told the committee how utterly disappointed I was that this forum had become a forum for other entities, both private and public, to ask for more spending, rather than a forum for tax payers. I provided them with an example of how well some of these entities, like the RH School District, spend their money. They use their $ (which SURPLUS $) to the tune of almost 2 million dollars on a Jumbotron and astro turf for a football stadium. Mind you, this stadium has been in existence for 20+ years without the benefit of astro turf or a jumbotron. The decision was made against public outcry not to spend this $ in this fashion. I went on to explain that “public money” is my money and your money. It should be used wisely and only on things necessary. It is not an endless pot and it is unfair to continue to place the burden of excessive spending on taxpayers.
Well, Senator Page from Charleston challenged my comments. He talked about growth in our area and how great our schools are in York County. Our schools are not all great in York County which I pointed out and that parent’s needed choice when it came to their child’s education. He then stupidly commented on how my children sure would enjoy the astro turf and jumbotron to which I kindly told him that I did not give a rat’s behind if my children enjoyed these luxuries, that this is not something that taxpayers should be required to foot the bill for. Senator Page chuckled and said, well, you do know Mam that you are talking to a “tax and spend liberal”. I let a moment pass for that to sink in with everyone…….and responded “clearly”.
These are the kind of people we have serving in the State House. People who publicly state, without hesitation, embarrassment, or shame that they are “tax and spend liberals”. We have others on the public dole, who without hesitation, beg these big spenders for more money and do so without shame. This is my money. This is every honest working person’s money. I file my taxes every year and pay a gracious plenty in taxes. And to be honest, I don’t mind paying my share of taxes. What I do mind is my tax dollars not being spent wisely. I want representatives in Columbia to be good stewards of my money and they are NOT! I don’t want to pay for a Jumbotron. I don’t want to funnel massive quantities into public education when we are getting no band for our buck. Corporate American doesn’t infuse massive amounts of money into failing companies. They have to turn a profit or they close. We should be seeing a “profit” in our public education system and we are NOT! We have been told for 40 years, “we need more money and the education system will improve”. It has NOT. Are we stupid? Do you continue to pour money into something that is not working? I don’t, I can’t because I don’t have an endless supply of money and we should let our government know THEY DON’T EITHER.
